Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
