New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
