At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
